Receive State Nomination
In addition to totalling the required points, you still need to be nominated by a state or territory to apply for the visa.
On the Expression of Interest you will need to state if you intend to work in any state you intend to work in. The visa holder will apply to be nominated to work in a profession that is listed on the State Occupation List. If there is a shortage of individuals skilled to work in that particular profession, the State may choose to nominate a visa holder to fill these roles.
Please note each state and region has different requirements for nomination. Some States will require you to lodge a separate application after submitting an expression of interest. Other states do not accept applications and will only contact you with an invitation to apply. If you do not receive an invitation to apply for state nomination, you cannot apply for the visa.
It could be useful to review the individual state or territory websites listed below to see which professions are required and the requirements for regional nomination.
Step 4: Immigration will Process Your Visa Application
- Depending on your circumstances, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few months for Immigration to process your application.
- Factors that increase processing time are: your home country, visa history, adding family members to your application, applying from outside Australia, prior criminal convictions, owing debt to the Australian government, having a medical condition, or travels to certain countries.
- In some instances, if you apply from inside Australia, Immigration may request additional information or evidence, which you will be required to provide within a certain period of time.
- In some instances, whether you apply from inside or outside Australia, you may be requested to undertake Medical Examinations or provide your Biometrics.
Our aims to lodge a decision ready application to ensure the quickest processing time for all students.

15 Tips for Submitting a Successful
Partner Visa Application
- Know the details of the appropriate visa subclass.
- Start establishing evidence of your relationship. There are minimum time requirements in many cases.
- Save money for the application fees. These visas can be very expensive and there are not payment plans. Your application will not be accepted until full payment is made.
- Give yourself enough time to apply for the visa. It can take several months to gather the relevant information and evidence.
- Provide great evidence. You need to provide clear and in-colour evidence, translated to English by an Accredited Translator
- Do not provide originals if not required. You may not get it back.
- Get copies of evidence certified when required. Copy/save your entire application before submitting it in case you need to apply again.
- Review the appropriate Application Forms far in advance to gather relevant information.
- Have someone else review your Application, ensuring critical information is correct
- Make sure you and your partner provide matching information, especially for dates.
- Provide true, accurate and complete information. Immigration will cross-reference information provided and untrue, inaccurate, or incomplete information may cause delay or even refusal.
- Keep immigration updated if you change address, phone number or email to be sure you do not miss any correspondences or requests.
- Do not submit your application unless you are certain you meet the criteria and have submitted a complete Application. You do not get your money back if your application is refused. Immigration does not consider evidence that would not have been available at the time of application.
- Know your rights and conditions while you wait for a decision. Depending on the visa you apply for, your travel to/from Australia may be restricted. Know these restrictions before travel plans.
- Consult a Registered Migration Agent. Many people will offer their personal advice and experiences, but each case is different and relying on advice from anyone but a Migration Agent or the Department of Home Affairs is usually unreliable
